Gardening: The Magical Stress Reducing Hobby For Assisted Living Nursing Residents

Gardening is a great hobby to take up. If you’ve had the opportunity to create a garden, you are familiar of the joys it can add to your life. It allows you the luxury of working outside and feeling closer to nature by growing fruits, vegetables, herbs or beautiful flowers. It is a very rewarding experience to watch something grow in front of your very own eyes. Gardening is an activity for all ages and is a great way to spend time with the family. Many assisted living nursing homes are encouraging their residents to participate in gardening activities. Assisted living nursing homes have noticed the healing effect gardening can have on their patients. Assisted Living Nursing residents active in gardening have a more positive outlook on life and have significant improvements in their health conditions.

Because senior citizens have limited physical activity as they grow older, Assisted Living Nursing communities arrange activities which allow even handicapped and disabled patients to garden. This could involve pot planting so senior patients can watch their plants grow within the comfort of their own room. Gardening activities offer seniors something to look forward to. Other gardening activities involve family members planting for their senior loved ones when they come to visit. It could be their senior loved one’s favorite flower or herb that families plant during their visit. Watching the progress of the plant growth gives assisted living nursing residents something to be occupied with. It takes the senior’s attention away from the suffering and problems their health conditions cause.

Some volunteers create vegetable patches for assisted living residents to enjoy. There is nothing more satisfying than eating a freshly grown fruit or vegetable. Because seniors are incapable of the strenuous activity of maintaining a vegetable patch, volunteers regularly visit to put in the hard work for them. Creating a garden gives assisted living nursing residents a pretty place to visit when the weather is nice. The birds, butterflies and critters the garden attracts provide non stop entertainment for the Assisted Living Nursing residents.

As the old saying goes, where there’s a will there’s away.  There is always some way you can incorporate the magic of gardening in an assisted living nursing resident’s life. If the assisted living nursing home is in a colder region, a green house might be an investment worth considering. A green house will give assisted living residents the joy of gardening all year round. Some of the more active and healthier assisted living nursing residents won’t find watering such a strenuous activity. Watering, weeding, pruning, are all tasks that can add purpose to the lonely lives of the assisted living nursing residents. Sometimes local nurseries also donate their time and resources to maintain window planting boxes in each of the rooms of the Assisted Living Nursing homes. The planting boxes are regularly changed so that assisted living nursing residents have something new to look at. If you are looking to add some flowers and plant life in the room of your senior loved one, talk to a garden expert for their suggestions. Plants that don’t need to be watered often and are low maintenance would be good options to consider. Keep in mind the room of your senior loved one and whether there is any sun light coming into the room. If there is not enough sunlight you should choose a plant that likes the shade.
