Chili Peppers May Provide A Solution For Seniors To Reduce High Blood Pressure

Researchers in China carried out a study on the active ingredient Capsaicin which is found in chili peppers. This active ingredient is what makes chili peppers spicy. Capsaicin is also known to relax blood vessels. Their study suggests that eating a spicy diet rich in hot chili peppers may help control hypertension, a common ailment that plagues senior citizens. For the study, the researchers gave hypertensive rats Capsaicin rich diets. They found the diet reduced their high blood pressure over time.

Capsaicin works by activating a receptor channel found in the lining of blood vessels. This leads to a rise in the production of nitric oxide which is a gaseous molecule known to protect blood vessels against inflammation and dysfunction. Prof Zhiming Zhu, who led the study, said hypertension affects more than 20 percent of the people in Northeastern China compared to 10 to 14 percent in Southwestern China. It has been observed that the residents of Southwestern China eat more spicy food with lots of chili pepper as compared to the residents in Northeastern China. The researchers feel that further studies need to be carried out to analyze the number of chili peppers that would need to be consumed on a daily basis to have a positive impact on blood vessels. Studies such as these play an important role in the assisted living health care industry. Assisted Living Facilities review such studies in order to improve the lifestyle of the senior patients they are responsible for. Healthy habits that can be incorporated into a senior’s life and help their aging process are duly noted by assisted living health care organizations.

There is more research left to be done to confirm these initial findings. Seniors are strongly warned against ingesting anything without consulting their doctor. Capsaicin is used in many over the counter topical skin preparations for the relief of arthritic pain and strained muscles. It used in a variety of creams, ointments, gels, liquids and lotions. Studies have also been done to explore the use of Capsaicin for other medical conditions.

Studies carried out by the University of Nottingham suggest Capsaicin is able to trigger a killing of human lung cancer cells. Capsaicin is also the key ingredient in the experimental drug Adlea. This drug is in Phase 2 trials as a long-acting analgesic to treat post-surgical and osteoarthritis pain for weeks to months after a single injection to the site of pain. It has been shown to reduce pain resulting from rheumatoid arthritis as well as joint and muscle pain from fibromyalgia. Capsaicin may help treat ear infections such as Otitis. There is some evidence that Capsaicin may help treat heartburn and circulatory problems such as heart disease from atherosclerosis or plaque that block the arteries to the heart. Capsaicin may also help in reducing risks of arrhythmia.

It’s being explored as a possible prophylaxis for Type1 Diabetes by researchers in Toronto, Canada. In this study Capsaicin was injected into subcutaneously affecting pancreatic sensory nerves of mice with Type 1 Diabetes. There is a suspected link between these nerves and Diabetes. The American Association of Cancer Research have compiled reports suggesting Capsaicin is able to kill prostate cancer cells by causing them to undergo programmed cell death. The studies were performed on tumors formed by human prostate cancer cell cultures grown in mouse model. The experiment revealed that the tumors treated with Capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of the untreated tumors. There have been several clinical studies conducted in Japan and China that showed natural capsaicin directly inhibits the growth of leukemic cells. It will be interesting to see what more research results will reveal about the ingredient Capsaicin. These studies will help assisted living homes improve the health and conditions of many of their senior patients.
