Need A Refresher Course On Determination Visit A Senior Center

All the proof I really needed to confirm the value of local senior centers was to visit with my elderly neighbor. In her late eighties having lost her husband a couple of years ago, she is still active, still driving, and although she wisely uses a walker to navigate her sloping driveway to the mailbox, she regularly participates in activities at the local senior citizens center. After the passing of her husband and her asking if I was willing to be a “contact to notify” on her medical alert system, I envisioned myself, quite willingly, as becoming a helper in her possible decline in light of her new “ living alone” status.

Quite the contrary, she became my “life/work coach” who in daily mailbox-side chats ended up supporting me through a lengthy period of unemployment and job searching. She was supportive, encouraging and anxious for me to experience what she does, “get up early, get out of the house, and do something productive.” All points being right on mark for emotional well-being, although in my case, also a matter of finances. Los Angeles Times Columnist Steve Lopez, known also for his series of columns on the homeless population in LA that resulted in the movie, The Soloist, wrote in the Sunday, July 19, 2010 issue on senior centers.

He recently visited a Pasadena, CA center “to find out what the regulars had to say about the wisdom of experience, as well as the challenges presented by aging” and how it relates to the issue of a 72 year old being a candidate for governor of California. After talking with several senior clients, one of whom had just returned from a “bucket list” tour around the world, a 98 year old pumping iron, and the fitness room monitor pushing 70 who has a sign on his desk that says” Facing Old Age? Don’t get angry, get even,” Lopez received feedback on the subject such as:

“Sure, age can be a factor if you begin to lose your edge, but it’s not nearly as big a deal as a candidate’s record and game plan;”
“Age and experience made my work with young students as a high school counselor rewarding because ‘you’ve got something to share;’”
“I left 70 a long time ago and we’re not age conscious here.”

He summarized his article with the thought that he was “beginning to think there might be sharper, more energetic candidates for governor at the senior center than the two we’ve got running.” In the future you may be faced with finding alternatives for yourself or an elderly loved one looking for an appropriate living environment.
