Assisted Living Residents Enjoy San Rafael’s Rich Treasures

Marin County California is just a little out there. As in, one famous bridge away from San Francisco. Marin is right next door to the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma and closer than you could ever imagine to everything that is unique in this clever corner of California. Located in the northern San Francisco Bay Area across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, the city of San Rafael is right at the center of things. The oldest, largest and most culturally diverse city in Marin County also enjoys the best weather. San Rafael is a lively business and cultural center located in an area of incomparable natural beauty. At the city’s heart is its charming, vibrant downtown shopping district. Downtown’s mixture of Victorian buildings, ethnic restaurants, retail stores and financial institutions creates San Rafael’s hometown flavor.

San Rafael has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers with highs of around just 80 degrees, making it a perfect retirement community. The city is also home to numerous senior care homes that offer independent, assisted living and longterm care services for seniors. The city’s proximity to major airports in San Francisco and Oakland provide the convenience for family members to visit their loved ones residing in this beautiful city. In the center of town is the new San Rafael City Plaza, with its innovative water wall fountain. The plaza has become a community gathering place and the center of seasonal events such as the Thursday night farmers markets and summertime concerts. Nearby is the authentic recreation of Mission San Rafael Arcangel; founded in 1817 as part of California’s mission chain. The establishment is a replica of the original mission with a museum, gift shop and self guided tours, which make wonderful day trips for families and their senior loved ones. It is also the backdrop for the annual “Youth in Arts,” Italian Street Painting Festival.

San Rafael’s history is present in many of its beautifully restored turn of the century buildings, including the Marin History Museum, the Falkirk Cultural Center, and the 106 year old Dominican University. Many of these buildings are accessible in guided walking tours available through the local Chamber of Commerce. An architectural treasure, The Marin County Civic Center, is home to the county’s government and is a national and state designated historical landmark. Designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, it is available on weekdays for self guided or docent led tours. Parklands and open space account for nearly 30 percent of the city’s land. Since it borders the San Pablo Bay, San Rafael has an abundance of marinas and many water oriented recreational activities are available. Nature lovers will appreciate the quiet beauty of China Camp State Park, a 1,600 acre park with hiking and biking trails and overnight campsites. The park’s visitor center presents the site’s interesting history as a Chinese immigrant shrimping village.

Marin County is home to fresh, sustainable agriculture. It has been described as the “pinnacle of luxury” and home to some of the world’s finest wines. It’s home to holistic artists and goat cheese artisans. A popular activity is visiting one of the local farms that supply organic produce to some of the finest restaurants in the Bay Area. Marin County is also well known for its arts, entertainment and culture. The County is proud of its home grown Marin Symphony that plays to sell out audiences each season.  The Marin Ballet, Marin Opera and Marin Theatre Company offer professional performances to appreciative local audiences.  The Mountain Play, one of the longest running theatre companies in Marin, performs its annual Broadway musical production in a huge amphitheatre at the top of Mount Tamalpais.  The Marin Center in San Rafael is the venue for national and international music, theatre and dance productions and numerous exhibitions throughout the year.
